Instructional Design Is Dead. So What's Next?
London (UK), June 2016 - The prolific learning-industry writer and explorer of the social age Julian Stodd will be part of a panel of experts at the upcoming Learning & Skills Group conference, part of the annual Learning Technologies Summer Forum in London, 14 June. He will join his colleagues in debating instructional design, gamification, user experience, and social learning.
LSG conference chair, Donald H Taylor, said, "Instructional design is in the spotlight. With the rise of user-generated content and the increased need for speed, do we still need the practise of ID? And if we do, is the focus on 'instruction' outdated and old fashioned? Here with their thoughts is a panel of three experts, all leaders in their respective fields: social learning, games, and user experience.
"In the golden days of instructional design, the course was king, and an instructional designer's job was simple: to design online courses. Then the world changed. We all went mobile, and social gamers grew up and moved into management. Now, there is an app for everything, and traditional instructional design is dead. Increasingly, the best learning solutions include social and game-like elements. User experience (UX) is now king. In this session we will hear from leading experts on social learning, games, and user-experience design. As a group we'll mash up these disciplines to define the role of the new “learning eXperience designer."
Julian Stodd will be joined by Rob Hubbard, managing director of LearningAge; Laura Kalbag, a designer with Ind.ie; and Pete Jenkins, the founder of Gamification+ to present a thought-provoking panel session entitled “Instructional design is dead. So what's next?”
The session will provide the opportunity to
- learn from experts in social, gaming, and UX design
- explore the intersection of these disciplines
- mash up design principles and steal what works for you
- define the role of the learning eXperience designer
- learn to design experiences that change behaviours
LSG conference booking is free of charge for Learning Technologies 2016 conference delegates and LSG members and also includes free access to the Learning Technologies Summer Forum exhibition.
