Prestigious Competition for the Pre-university Education
Bucharest (RO), July 2007 - (by Elena Lita) Bucharest recently hosted the fifth edition of the national SIVECO Cup contest organized by SIVECO Romania in partnership with the Romanian Ministry of Education, Research and Youth and with PC Magazine Romania. The SIVECO Cup is a prestigious competition for the pre-university education, awarding excellence in developing educational software.
The contest is intended for teacher-pupil teams made up of up to three pupils from grades five through twelve, a scientific content coordinator, and an IT coordinator. This year each team had to develop educational software based on Jules Verne's work.
The Siveco Cup 2007 drew nearly 2,000 participants, and a record number of teams qualified for the finals (21), among which were many first-timers. The young competitors' creativity and originality was highly appreciated by a jury made up of nine important representatives from academia, education, and business.
"I am really impressed by the interest and involvement these young people displayed for an informatics competition and how the number of projects submitted increases annually", said Radu Jugureanu, eContent Manager at SIVECO Romania and the coordinator of the SIVECO Cup competition.
"The inventiveness and the complexity of these projects make me wait eagerly for the next edition to see if these young pupils have the resources to develop and propose still better solutions. And the surprise is that year after year I witness some exceptional presentations that confirm the value of the Romanian pupils and the quality of our informatics education".
The SIVECO Cup competition is dedicated to students with aptitudes, abilities, and interest in developing educational software and to teachers who present innovative teaching and learning techniques. The participants must develop a web-based project treating intra- or inter- disciplinary, nonexclusively, aspects of the following domains: science, society, culture, and literature. The projects must contain highly interactive content and can be developed in Flash, Cult 3D, Java, Java 3D, or ActiveX-compatible formats.
The complexity and value of the projects increases annually, making it more difficult for the committee to choose the finalists and winners of the competition. This year, the first-prize trophy was awarded to Adina Manta, Dan Petrescu, Emilian Dancescu, and Stefan Paun from "A.I.Cuza" High School in Ploiesti for the remarkable project "Virtual History Study".
The coordinating teacher was Irina Savuta. The winners will have the chance to exhibit their work at SIVECO Romania's corporate stand at the exhibition accompanying this year's Online EDUCA Berlin conference in November.
The second and third prizes went to entries from the "Grigore Moisil" Informatics High School in Iasi, which confirmed yet again the outstanding quality of the institution's program.
The second-place project was entitled "The Social Conduct" and was realized by Alexandru Chimu and Vlad Constantinescu, with the support of their coordinating teachers Claudia Carausu and Emanuela Cerchez. The team will be given the opportunity to visit the Intel Innovation Center in Ireland. Third place was occupied by Alexandru Perieteanu and Alexandru Buca with the project "Data Modeling". The project's coordinating teachers were Emanuela Cerchez and Marinel Serban.
