South Yorkshire College Adopts Athena

Lingfield (UK), February 2011 - Doncaster College and University Centre has over 20,000 people enrolled on more than 500 part and full-time courses. The College's management was challenged when they needed to review students at an early enough stage in order to create individual action plans. To tackle the problem, Doncaster turned to LB Solutions and set up a pilot scheme using the Athena Learning Management System to standardise and improve the quality of the review process.

LB Solutions were able to meet the College's needs because their Athena product was

  • easy to use and understand;
  • able to save time and make the review process easy and cost effective. For example: Athena has the ability to scan in paper documents and extract assessments details. At Doncaster, noticeably all tutors used the electronic system and no-one used the paper process;
  • able to make the process a benefit to users - the reviews could be done in a few keystrokes;
  • able to make relevant measures immediately accessible to all tutors;
  • able to add and modify attributes as needed, based on the College's work rules;
  • able to accommodate a variety of different tutor reviews;
  • able to provide a consolidated review.

The Athena product was adapted to meet Doncaster's specific requirements, and it is this flexibility which was instrumental in the successful trial. Athena is unique in allowing the client to set the parameters, rather than the software dictating how they should work.

The pilot has been very successful and is now being extended. According to Kathryn Brentnall - Director of Quality and Raising Standards, "From the initial presentation, we have been able to work collaboratively with LB Solutions to develop a process that while saving time has also allowed staff to focus on the learner rather than a cumbersome paper-based process."
